FINAL PRODUCT - STATEMENT OF INTENT

How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief? (400 words)


Product 1

My radio show will adhere to conventional radio-editing techniques, such as frequent cuts and joins in the conversation, being smoothed over by atmos sound, also fading the background music/jingle in/out. Radio 4 comedy show’s also frequently use diegetic sound of a live-audience, which I will adapt by using diegetic sound of the hosts and guest(s) laughing, as I feel like this adhere’s more to the recently-popular medium of podcasts.

The Show will be called, ‘It’s just banter’, a play on words.It sounds like a statement one would say after teasing or making a joke out of someone, which is exactly what this show does.

The show will feature two main anchors/hosts a man and a woman from two apposing social groups of gender, and also the celebrity guest will be from the LGBTQ+ community. This representation will be made clear through the guest making jokes about her sexuality and the hosts emphasising their differing cultural competence’s. 

The show will appeal to a fun-loving, 16-25 year old mass market demographic because the show acts as a fun translator of news, making it more accessible and interesting to a younger demographic. The show will do this through a comical banter, that is provided through a casual conversation between naturally funny hosts, and a special celebrity guest. 

The audience will be able to recognise the celebrity guest whom is based off of popular social media activists such as Chrissy Tiegen and Jameela Jamil, who are both popular and well known ‘celebrities’ whom also have their foot in the political arena. 

The celebrity guest is both funny, but not a generic stand-up comedian as comedy shows normally use, and also has a knowledge about politics, but isn’t a politician either, for example grime rapper Stormzy. Featuring a celebrity, adheres to the popular celebrity culture

Other late evening comedy shows featured on Radio 4 include Dead Ringers and the Now Show.  Both shows mix politics and comedy, and my radio show would use both this elements, but aimed at a younger demographic, hence the different approach to comedy, through colloquial chat versus the traditional use of comedians.

My Radio Show’s jingle will not be a necessarily ‘cheesy’ jingle, but incorporate the recognisable sound of big ben chimes, as a reference to the show’s political elements.

The show will also have segments based off of audience interaction, called ‘#banterifficnews’, an element in which the audience tweet in their favourite funny stories from the week, and the presenters and celebrity guest will discuss and laugh about their headline. I believe this will act as an audience hook, as they will want to be involved in the show, possibly for a shoutout.

The website will incorporate the house colours of blue, orange and pink, that I will use on my cover art/logo, that would be displayed on BBC Sounds. 

The website will clearly indicate what time the show will be on, with links back to Radio 4’s homepage, so the audience can listen live to what is on Radio 4, and the  BBC Sounds website, which is where ‘It’s Just Banter’, would be broadcast.

The website will feature a trailer adhering to that of Radio 4’s ‘Beyond Today’ podcast, as I feel this provides an exciting insight in the show for new-listeners, and summarises what the show is about.

There will be a displayed Instagram page, a social-media platform, in which the audience can see behind-the-scenes footage and what is coming up on future shows. There will also be a Twitter logo, that insinuates the show’s twitter page in which the audience can further interact with the h=show, and its presenters.

The two-original images will be images of the hosts and guests of the pilot episode, boomerangs and quirky video clips of behind the scenes, on the show’s Instagram, and also images of upcoming guests to encourage the audience to look forward to and listen to upcoming episodes.

I will subvert from BBC Radio’s official website template as I feel it is outdated and not relevant and intriguing to my target audience. I will adopt codes and conventions from BBC websites, such as the use of the official logo, presenter profile pages, as that used for Greg James, and the ‘Live listening’ bar linked to live Radio 4 airplay. Instead, I am going to incorporate the mise-en-scene of popular radio shows among the 16-25 demographic, such as Beats 1, and BBC Sounds.

My linked page titled ‘Get to Know Us’ in the menu, follows the conventions of BBS Radio presenter profiles, and gives insight into the presenters lives, so the audience can get to know them, adhering to the branding f presenters on radio show, as they arefrequently the face of the show.


How do you intend to link your media products to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the digitally convergent nature of your media products? (100 words)

To adhere to the brief’s requirement of there being ‘a clear scene of branding between the two elements’ incorporate the same typography and colours used in the radio show’s cover art, and reference elements of the show that have been mentioned in the show. 

My logo of the cartoon icons of he presenters, will be used both over the cover art and the website, a clear reference to the radio show.
